Rumors are starting to circulate the web that Bill Gates may be returning to Microsoft as CEO. He is still currently the Chairman of the Board at Microsoft and holds the majority shares in the company.
One prominent chief executive told Fortune he’d heard from someone close to Gates that he might be considering such a move.
The reason that this speculation is starting to happen, could be down to Steve Balmer, who is currently at the reins of the company but has struggled for years to get the stock prices at higher levels. One activist investor, David Einhorn of Greenlight Capital, called current CEO Steve Ballmer a weight dragging down the company’s share price.
This wouldn’t be the first time that a founder of a major company has made a come back. Larry Page recently returned to the helm of Google this year and things certainly are changing there. Most famously of course was the return of Steve Jobs, who after being forced out of Apple by the board, returned back in 1997 to a company on the verge of failure and made history by completely changing it to make it the company it is today.
If he were to return, it would be to a slightly different Microsoft that he left as mobile platforms seem to be the flavour at the moment, especially with Windows 8 being aimed at that. Also, having a founder return to the helm of such a famous company would be a massive boost not only to the staff, developers and loyal customers, but to the market as well. The other great thing that happens when a founder returns, is that there is no ‘red tape’ for them. They have a vision for what they want to do, and they do it. Maybe that’s the kick up the arse that Microsoft needs.
In 2010 in an interview with the Daily Mail he was asked, “will he ever return to helm Microsoft?” His replied, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation “is my job now.”
Could this happen, or is this just another rumor that seems to crop up every now and then, no one knows, but having him back would be great if I’m honest.
